How to apply for a visa

Non-Immigrant Visa Appointment System

Introduction:

To better serve the needs of nonimmigrant visa applicants, we have instituted an online visa appointment service.  From August 1, 2007 appointments will no longer be made by telephone or email.  The embassy strongly encourages intending travelers to apply for visas well in advance of their proposed journey, and to always refrain from making irrevocable travel plans until the visa has been issued and they are in receipt of their passport and visa.

Only those who are resident in the Suva consular district (Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, Tuvalu, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna) may make appointments online.    If you are NOT a resident of our consular district, you must request an appointment through our email address at:  consularsuva@state.gov.

How Do I Apply?

Step:1  The non-refundable USD131.00 application fee must be paid in Fijian dollars at any Post Fiji outlet.  Effective August 1, 2008, as from August 1, 2008 the Fiji dollar equivalent for a non-immigrant visa non-refundable processing fee will be FJD 197.00.  NOTE: This fee is non-refundable but transferable.  This fee is valid for use within one year.

Step:2  Complete the electronic visa application form EVAF DS-156 online, print it out and bring all three pages to your interview.  Applications will not be accepted unless completed on the electronic form.  All male nonimmigrant visa applicants regardless of age must also fill out and submit a DS-157.

All student visa applicants must fill EVAF DS-156, DS-157 (ALL male students) and DS-158.  Applicants for student visas (F1 and M1) must include the original SEVIS I-20 form and proof of SEVIS payment.  Family members seeking F2 and M2 status need their own I-20 forms.

SEVIS fees are paid online or www.ice.gov/sevis .  The institution should advise of SEVIS fee payment information and procedures.

Step:3  Make an appointment by clicking on  Nonimmigrant Automated Appointment System.  Please schedule only one appointment per person.  If you schedule numerous appointments, they will not be accepted.

Step:4  All persons and property entering the U.S. embassy are subject to search for security purposes.  All electronic devices, liquids and/or flammable items including cigarette lighters and matches are not allowed in the embassy building.  After inspection, mobile phones may be checked at the door of the embassy and will not be brought inside the building.  At the interview, the primary applicant will be the only person allowed into the embassy except in the case of minor children (age 17 and under).  Parents or legal guardians are advised to accompany a minor child.

Step:5  Most applicants will be told immediately following the interview whether or not they will be granted a visa.

Step:6  All applicants must present the following documents at the interview:

  • PASSPORT:    Current valid passport of not less than 6months from its expiry date.  All supporting documents for the visa application.
  • APPLICATION FORM:  EVAF DS-156, DS-157 (for male applicants) and  DS-158 for those applying for a student visa.
  • PHOTOGRAPH:  A 2” X 2” size color photo with a white background, taken within the last six months.  The head (measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin) should measure between 25-35mm with the head centered in the frame facing straight.  Affix it to the DS-156.
  • VISA FEE RECEIPT PAYMENT:  You must present a Post Fiji receipt together with the above application forms.  A copy of SEVIS payment receipt.
  • EMS PREPAID COURIER ENVELOPE:  Visas are not issued on the same day as the interview.  Fiji residents must bring a one self-addressed, prepaid EMS envelope to the interview for the return of passport, visa and documents.  Non Fiji residents must anticipate a 24hr process prior to an issuance of a visa.

We are required to interview and fingerprint virtually every visa applicant. This includes applicants who were previously able to drop off their applications at the Embassy. For this reason, there may be a period of 5-10 days between your call for an appointment and the first available date for an interview. We urge persons who know they will be traveling to apply early. Unfortunately, we will be able to make earlier appointments only in emergency cases, i.e., life or death situations, and in cases regarding students and exchange program participants. Hence, we will not be able to make earlier appointments because a flight, a conference, or other travel opportunity will be missed.

For more information, please contact the Embassy.
