Tonga: Death of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV

Yesterday Tongan King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV passed away in Auckland, New Zealand, following a long illness.  The 88 year old King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV reigned for 41 years.

The United States conveys its condolences to King George Tupou V, who has succeeded his father, and to Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho, other members of the royal family, and the people of Tonga.  King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV was a good friend of the United States, ensuring that Tonga stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in promoting peace and stability in the Pacific region and the world, including most recently in Iraq.

As we extend our deepest sympathy to the people of Tonga on the passing of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, the United States remains committed to continuing our strong ties with Tonga.
