Deputy Permanent Representative Alex Wolff's Statement to UNGA
Tongan King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV's Death
The United States, as the host country, wishes to express our deepest regrets on the passing of Tongan King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV.
The United States conveys its condolences to King George Tupou V, who has succeeded his father, and to Queen Halaevalu Mata’aho, other members of the royal family, and the people of Tonga.
King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV was a good friend of the United States, ensuring that Tonga stood shoulder to shoulder with us and others in promoting peace and stability in the Pacific region and the world, including most recently in Iraq.
In the latter years of King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV’s reign, Tonga has taken initial steps toward democracy and greater representation in government. We wish our very best for King George Tupou V and the people of Tonga in advancing this important goal.
As we extend our deepest sympathy to the people of Tonga on the passing of King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV, the United States remains committed to continuing our strong ties with Tonga.
