The people of America mourn the passing of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, a long-standing friend of the United States, who demonstrated his commitment to foster a more peaceful
world throughout the course of his long and esteemed reign. On behalf of all Americans, I extend my deepest condolences to His Majesty King Siaosi Tupou V, Her Majesty Queen Halaevalu Mata'aho and the members of the royal family, and to all the people of Tonga.
My personal representative, Ambassador Larry M. Dinger, accompanied by General John M. Brown, Commanding General, U.S. Army Pacific Command, and David B. Cohen, U.S.
Representative to the Pacific Community and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Interior, will attend the funeral. They bring with them America's prayers for the King and
for the nation of Tonga.
